LGBTQIA+ Affairs
In school and education systems around the country, the LGBT community is largely underrepresented, and so many children grow up not knowing what the community even is, and whether or not they may be a part of it. The LGBTQIA+ affairs committee focuses on the rights and representations of students who are a part of the LGBTQIA+ community in the education system, making an effort to decrease heteronormativity.
Racial & Ethnic Affairs
Racial Issues have definitely come to the light in recent times. However, they have most definitely been ongoing, as well, as a relevant problem for centuries. The Racial and Ethnic Affairs committee devotes time to make progress, specifically in the education community, regarding these issues. They strive to eliminate racial and ethnic discrimnation through increasing representation and removing inequalities.
Religious Affairs
Growing up practicing a minority religion in the US can make one realize very quickly the lack of representation in the nation’s education system, especially in what is supposedly “secular”. The Religious Affairs committee aims to increase representation, so every student can realize their beliefs are valid, and the system avoids giving certain students advantages solely due to their faith.
Financial Accessibility
People with financial privilege are often blind to the struggles and missed opportunities those without high socioeconomic status face. In this country, everything costs money. Although public school claims to be free and funded by tax money, students that can afford certain resources are not given the same quality of education. The Financial Accessibility Committee focuses on making sure all students are given the same caliber and quality of education, despite any financial struggles.
Inclusivity and Accessibility
Our education system is inherently ableist. Those with physical disabilities as well as neurodivergent students are graded on parts of themselves that they cannot control. The Inclusivity and Accessibility Committee strives to make sure the education system does not punish those with disabilities for simply being who they are and does not take away from any opportunities they should be given.
Digital Organizing
The Digital Organizing Team consists of social media managers as well as graphic designers for the organization. The team manages the social media as well as creates the posts, and designs logos, websites, flyers, etc.
Legal & Policy
The Legal and Policy Team focuses on making sure educational policies are up to date and not discriminatory, and fixes anything oppressive in the educational legal policies. They also advocate for legal change in professional settings.
